How can I use acupressure to relieve a headache or other pains?

Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:For simple relief of headaches and stress, try acupressure. The basic principle of acupuncture and acupressure are the same. The traditional Chinese technique is that you actually have energy meridians that go up your arm, and these lines of energy get disrupted sometimes and can cause some of the subtle things that we complain about.
There's a simple acupressure technique that you can try on yourself. Take your hand and pick a spot that's halfway between your thumb and your index finger. If you push there gently with the tip of your finger, there's a little bit of discomfort. Doing this for a few minutes is an effective treatment for headaches.Do you easily get carsick? To alleviate motion sickness, apply pressure right between the tendons about three finger breadths above your wrist.
In addition to this self-treatment, you can use a motion sickness bracelet. The bracelets actually remind you to press there, which why they work so well.It might be difficult to try this acupressure technique on your own, but it's well worth finding a partner because it can relieve stress. First, find your trapezius muscle on your shoulder. If you move your finger up your shoulder, to where it becomes your neck, you push down there. Part of the beauty is you've got to be able to relax your shoulders.
There are a number of places on your foot that are perfect spots for acupressure. One is right at the base of the foot, which can get rid of tension. Another is a bone halfway up the side of your foot, good for relieving menstrual pain, bloating, and constipation.
If you push on the part of the foot next to the pinky toe, it can cure blurry vision and other eye problems. The science behind the relationship between the pinky toe and eye function is one of the breakthroughs in understanding the thousands-of-years-old knowledge present in Eastern medicine.
A medical manuscript showed that when pressure was put on that part of the foot, the brain function lit up in the back of the brain. And guess what? The back of the brain controls your eyes. The occipital lobe controls your eyes. There's no connection between those two. There's no way for us with Western medicine to understand how that's possible. But it did light up.Helpful? 11 people found this helpfulFor simple relief of headaches and stress, try acupressure. The basic principle of acupuncture and acupressure are the same. Dr. Maoshing Ni answered:Recently, a patient's 8-year-old child was suffering from a headache. I was able to bring her the benefits of acupuncture without the needles. I simply used my own fingers to administer acupressure on an acupoint in the web between her thumb and index finger called Valley of Harmony. Within minutes, her headache was gone.
Find the acupoint Valley of Harmony (Li 4) on yourself. It's in the web between the thumb and index finger on both hands. Apply steady pressure with your thumb until you feel soreness. Hold for 2 minutes. Repeat on the other hand.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulRecently, a patient's 8-year-old child was suffering from a headache. Dr. Dawn Marcus answered:Acupressure may be soothing when performed during a headache episode. Relief will be greatest if acupressure is followed by other pain-relieving therapies, such as relaxation techniques or stretching exercises.
- Find the depression in the middle of the back of your neck between the neck muscles, and move up within this depression to where the neck meets the skull. Firmly rub the area where the neck muscles attach to the skull for 2-3 minutes with deep circular movements.
- Find the depression at each temple, immediately behind your eyebrows. Rub firmly and deeply for 1 minute.

- Find the muscle that lies in the web between your thumb and index finger by compressing this area with the thumb and index finger of your other hand. Deeply and firmly make circular motions over this area for 5 minutes. Repeat with your other hand.

Phil Veneziano answered:The Chinese look at headache a bit differently than Western doctors. They want to know where the headache is before they try to treat it. This allows us to determine which meridian is stagnant... where the blockage is.
If the headache is in the front of your head, it's likely there is a digestive or allergic component to it, and pressing gently in the area between the thumb and first finger will alleviate this type. Alternately, the inside corners of your eyes can be depressed or a point one thumb's distance back from the front of your hairline (Unless of course you have no hairline, like me) :) directly in the center of your head will help with this type headache.
If the headache is at the top of your head, pressing between the first and second toe will have a good effect on the pain. The sides of the head most times relate to stress related pain, or perhaps menstrual deficiency. For this I recommend a technique that will have a clearing effect on your senses in general. It is performed as follows:
Form your hands into a claw-like shape and firmly rake the sides of your head front to back, as if you were combing your hair with your fingers. This technique also helps to stimulate your brain on those days when you're feeling a bit "foggy". Don't reach for the coffee. Stand up, get a bit of water and rake!!
