What are passive range of motion (ROM) exercises?

  • Passive ROM exercises are passive stretches where a partner, a machine, or some type of pressure is used to help an individual move a joint through its full available range of motion. Individuals themselves can also passively move a limb to exercise and stretch a joint. An example of a passive ROM exercise is ankle rotation where an individual takes a client’s ankle with one hand and slowly rotates the client’s foot inward and outward.
