You should read to your toddler as much as they will let you read to them. Toddlers are interested in exploring the world around them. They often don't want to sit still on their parent's lap. Let them choose the books, let them turn the pages. It's a good idea to get books that are fairly 'rough and tumble' -- the board books, so that they can't rip pages, and you don't have to worry about how the book is going to hold up. It's recommended about 10 to 15 minutes per day, but often they may or may not want to read that much. Don't feel that you have to follow the story lines. Sometimes they enjoy flipping through the book and pointing at dogs or pointing at the red fire truck. And they'll pick up on the story later as they get to be older.
