Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answeredDepression in teenagers is often the result of stress or troubling events. Stress may be brought on by arguments at home or with friends. Sex hormones also begin to affect teens, which can cause stress. Troubling events may include the death of a close friend or loved one, a difficult relationship or a breakup, or not doing well in school or at sports.

Teen depression can be situational or hereditary. The teen years are incredibly stressful. School, grades, and social situations can create major angst, which can result in depression. Those with a family history of depression are more likely to be depressed.
