Can I take my medication as usual before surgery?

Certain medications must be continued up to the morning of surgery, while others will be discontinued up to a week prior. In my practice, patients will stop taking estrogen, aspirin, Advil, Motrin, and naproxen one week before the surgery. Medications that may continue include high blood pressure drugs, asthma inhalers and thyroid agents. The anesthesiologist will contact the patient at least l week prior to surgery to discuss ALL medications and review which medications to discontinue.
