In this time of economic hardship, political instability, and rapid technological change, empathy is the one quality we most need if we're going to survive and flourish in the 21st century. In truth, every age is an age of transition, but it's hard to fully comprehend a turning point when you are living through it. We are simply too close to what is happening to gain the perspective that comes with distance. But the signs are everywhere around us that one age is dying and another is being born, a historic moment such as has not occurred since the Middle Ages gave way to the Renaissance.
Many and varied routes of inquiry are converging to give us a perspective on human possibility that belonged strictly to the world of the imagination only a short time ago. From genetic engineering to spiritual healing, old assumptions about man's limitations are being altered or erased. Of even greater importance, many people are growing more spiritually sensitive, and they are translating their heightened sensitivity into attitudes and actions that are changing not only their own lives, but the lives of those around them. In mainstream publications and Main Street conversations, there is talk of a new beginning.
Now is the time to recognize that what we require from ourselves above all else is a psychological shift, a spiritual breakthrough, a new readiness to rediscover what it is to be human and a thorough reformation in understanding ourselves.
