Retin A is a topical cream or gel that is derived from Vitamin A. Retin-a is a type of retinoid. Retinoids act on the DNA of the living layers of skin to reverse the signs and symptoms of sun damage and skin aging. Effects include increased collagen, increased (hyaluronic acid, thus ‘plumping’ the skin and improving wrinkles, reduction in pigmentation, improving the skin texture, complexion, blackheads and pores, and an overall improvement in the appearance of the skin.
Given these effect, it has two main uses: acne treatment and reversing/preventing signs of aging.
- Because the buildup of dead skin cells is minimized, less blockages in the follicles occur, thus preventing acne
- Retin-A helps fight ageing through diminishing wrinkles through the increase of collagen, and reduced pigmentation
Irritated and flaking skin can occur, however this can be minimized if you gradually build up usage.
The new, 3rd generation of retinoid i.e. brand names like Avage or Zorac are much better tolerated and less irritating on the skin.
