Before you take the weight-loss drug Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate), you should know whether you are allergic to any ingredients of this drug.

You should know that it's not safe to take Qsymia if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication can cause serious birth defects in a developing fetus, such as cleft lip or palate.

Also, be aware that for Qsymia to be effective, you should adopt an exercise routine and eat a reduced-calorie diet while taking it.

You should know that having certain medical conditions increases your risks for serious side effects from Qsymia. Be sure to give your doctor a complete medical history before starting Qsymia. In particular, let your doctor know if you have glaucoma, hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) or depression.

You should know that certain medications and supplements may interact with Qsymia. These interactions may increase your risks for serious side effects or decrease the drug’s effectiveness. In particular, you should not take Qsymia within 14 days of taking any monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Doing so may cause serious or life-threatening side effects. Before you start taking Qsymia, tell your doctor about all your other medicines (prescription and nonprescription), as well as any supplements you take.

Qsymia is a drug for long-term weight management. Taken once daily, it combines two FDA-approved drugs: phentermine, an appetite suppressant, and topiramate, an anti-seizure medication.
