In response to controversy around the new prescription drug plan, some private insurance companies have volunteered to work together to lower costs by 1.5 percent annually. To curtail fraud and abuse of Medicare, several private insurance companies have developed technologies to better detect suspicious billing patterns. Their efforts are in conjunction with the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association to develop sophisticated computer systems to detect suspicious billing patterns. The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud, a public advocacy and educational organization founded in 1993, includes consumers as well as government agencies and insurers.
