For most people, the only possible side effect of taking oral magnesium is diarrhea, which can be avoided by taking the supplement with food.

Side effects from too much magnesium are unusual, because the body clears excess magnesium naturally. In rare cases, magnesium toxicity can cause dizziness or fainting, flushing, or muscle paralysis.

An overdose is extremely unlikely, but can happen in people with kidney disease.
