Coughing is a symptom of lung cancer, but it is also a symptom of many other less serious problems. If you have any signs or symptoms that suggest you might have lung cancer, your doctor will want to take a medical history to check for risk factors and learn more about your symptoms. Your doctor will also examine you to look for signs of lung cancer and other health problems.
If the results of the history and physical exam suggest you may have lung cancer, more involved tests will probably be done. These might include imaging tests and/or getting biopsies (samples) of lung tissue.
