The current recommendation concerning salivary gland cancer is typically surgery. If surgery is not an option because the tumor is too large or is in a dangerous spot, radiation is generally recommended. Sometimes radiation is used in combination with surgery to shrink a tumor before a person is operated on. It can also be used as a follow-up treatment to get rid of any cancer cells that might still be there. In some cases, chemotherapy treatment is recommended. This usually happens when the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.
