National Academy of Sports Medicine answeredLeg exercises that emphasize stabilization and endurance, combined with a reduced calorie diet can help make your legs smaller. Leg exercises that focus on stabilization and endurance do not put as much overload on the leg muscles as more traditional leg strengthening exercises, and therefore do not provide the same stimulus for muscle growth. A great exercise for the legs that focuses on stabilization and endurance is the single-leg squat touchdown. To peform this exercise, start with your feet pointed straight ahead and hip-width apart. Next, lift the chest, tuck the chin, and place your hands on the hips. Squeeze your butt muscles, draw-in the belly button to tighten the abs, and balance on one leg, lifting the other leg directly beside it. Lastly, squat down by bending the hip and knee while reaching the opposite hand toward the balance foot. Hold in the bottom position for two seconds and return to the start position. Perform 12-20 repetitions and repeat for a total of 1-3 sets.
