The body's protections again epidemic disease, and other diseases for that matter, include the skin and the immune system. The skin forms a barrier that prevents pathogens from entering and infecting the body.
Sometimes an animal or insect bite can break the skin and transmit disease. An open cut can also allow microbes to enter. If a pathogen manages to get through the skin's barrier via a cut or other opening, a healthy immune system will work to fight off the invader.
