Can a stent be removed once it is implanted?

answer

When a stent is implanted in an artery, the cells of the artery wall eventually grow over the stent. The stent becomes permanently embedded in the artery wall. Because of this, a stent cannot be removed once it has been placed in an artery. Doing so would damage the artery wall. If you are in conversations with your doctor about receiving a stent and have any concerns about its permanency or related medications that you may need to take, do not hesitate to ask questions. You and your cardiologist together can make the best decisions for your heart health.
