It’s also important to get the nutrients that are critical to thyroid function. Make sure you are getting iodine (at least 200 mcg a day), selenium (150 to 200 mcg a day, but not more than 300 to 400 mcg a day), and tyrosine (1,000+ mg a day). Iodine is essential for optimal thyroid function. Many people whose fatigue is accompanied by a low body temperature improve when they take iodine. Take an iodine tablet containing 12.5 mg (12,500 mcg) a day for two to four months if you experience sugar cravings and fatigue, have a daytime body temperature below 98.3F, or have breast tenderness or cysts. Higher doses may suppress thyroid function (with long-term use), so they are best used under a doctor’s supervision.
