    Yes, federal laws protect you if you have a pre-existing condition and want to change jobs. The 1996 Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) ensures that your new health plan cannot deny you coverage based on your health status when you are moving from one group health plan to another. Pre-existing conditions must be covered by the new health plan.
