If I'm turned down, can I get high-risk health insurance?

If you are turned down for private insurance, you may be eligible for high-risk insurance pools – state programs for such people. In general, premiums for high-risk pools cost twice as much as private plans and often have strict guidelines for eligibility and mandatory waiting periods. For a list of state pools and their Web sites, then contact your state’s insurance commission for updates. You will need to prove that you couldn’t obtain insurance and you’re not eligible for COBRA or other government-sponsored plans.
