Nexium, or esomeprazole, is used to treat stomach acid disorders such as gastrointestinal reflux disease and ulcers. It can also be used as a preventative treatment for people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which can increase the risk of developing a stomach ulcer among certain groups. Nexium can also be used in combination with antibiotics to treat ulcers caused by bacterial infection. As part of a family of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors, Nexium decreases stomach acid production, thereby alleviating heartburn, damage to the esophagus, and other symptoms of excess stomach acid.
