Karen L. Gorton, PhD, MS, RN, Emergency Room Nursing, answered on behalf of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI)You should not expect your personal trainer to update your fibromyalgia doctor UNLESS your doctor has prescribed treatment with that specific trainer. However, to ensure that the communication does occur, you can request that your personal trainer provide a written letter, updating your physician on a monthly basis.

It really depends on your personal trainer's level of experience dealing with physicians and even further, fibromyalgia. Most personal trainers do not have a background where they have dealt with physicians on a daily basis, which may make them feel slightly uncomfortable in this situation. I recommend discussing this with your personal trainer prior to beginning training so that there is a good understanding of what you expect. This will allow you to make a better decision in choosing your trainer.
Today, there are many certified athletic trainers who also personal train. The difference between the athletic trainer and the personal trainer is education and experience. Certified athletic trainers are in many settings, even physician offices as physician extenders. They deal with physicians on a daily basis, rehabilitate patients with all type of disorders, and are better equipped to correlate your care with your physician. This does not mean a personal trainer cannot, but just that the athletic trainer does this on a daily basis and is trained to deal with this type of situation. Hope this helps!
