Why would my peripheral vision get distorted for brief periods?

These may be attacks of ocular migraine, which produces visual symptoms, much like you describe, but usually in both eyes.  With ocular migraine, you may not get the headaches that are usually part of full migraine attacks. You should be evaluated by an eye doctor to make sure your eyes are healthy.
