Unfortunately, no one can predict how long you will wait for a liver transplant. Once you have been officially listed as a candidate for a liver transplant, a waiting period follows until a suitable donor becomes available. The waiting time – which can vary from one day to one year or more – depends on organ availability and urgency, in other words you will be given a score based on how sick you are and livers are given out to the sickest patients first. When an organ becomes available, the transplant coordinator will first call your home or any other number you have provided (i.e., your work number). You should always keep the transplant coordinator informed of your whereabouts because organs are very difficult to get; it would be a tragedy if a liver became available and you could not be found.
