UnitedHealthcare answeredA Fee-for-Service (FFS) dental plan gives you the most accessibility and control over selecting your dentist – whether a general dentist or specialist. While you can select your dentist with a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) dental insurance plan, to get the greatest savings you will want to of select from a network of dentists. Alternately, you may choose a non-network dentist but end up paying more for your treatment. While the trade off is not important to some people, others like to have more control of their dental health care and prefer the FFS despite their higher cost. Unlike an HMO, with the FFS or PPO you can still refer yourself to a dental health specialist for a problem like gum disease, root canal or oral health surgery. With the HMO dental plan, you have to wait until your dentist refers you to a specialist within your network.
