A toothache is often a symptom of an underlying condition, such as tooth decay (a cavity) or an infection. A dentist is usually the best person to make a diagnosis if you have a toothache. He or she will examine your teeth and gums, and may suggest dental x-rays. The dentist may also look at your ears, nose, throat, and neck, because problems in these areas may be felt as tooth pain. Besides the exam, your dentist will want to know about your medical and dental history and will ask for more information, such as severity of your pain, other symptoms you may be having, and medicines you are taking.
