A dental crown will usually last several years, provided that it doesn't get chipped (porcelain crowns are more prone to chipping) and fits you well. A poorly-fitting crown may be looser than it should be and fall out, leading to the need for a replacement crown soon after you get your original crown. If you are looking for ways to help your crown last for as many years as possible, three easy steps involve brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing at least once a day, and visiting your dentist regularly. By taking good care of your crown and your other teeth, you can play an important role in keeping your original crown for many years -- in some cases, up to 40 years.

In an ideal world your teeth should last for your lifetime; however, decay, fracture, gum problems, chipping and a variety of other problems can occur that require treatment.

Just as you may have problem with your natural teeth, bridges and teeth with single crowns are subject to problems. These problems include recurrent decay, recession and exposure of crown margins, fracture or porcelain, periodontal disease and fracture of the teeth, to name a few. Remember your teeth are still under the crowns, and therefore problems can develop in addition to actual problems with the crowns themselves.

Regular check-ups and evaluations can go a long way to maintain extensive dental "work", and excellent home care is also essential in maintaining crowns and bridges for as long as possible.

Just as your car requires regular maintenance, your teeth, gums and restorations require regular continuing care to maintain optimum health.

A crown should last at least 5 years. Most crowns will last 10 years or longer if the person practices good dental hygiene and sees his or her dentist every 6 months for a checkup.
