SCAI answeredCyanosis can occur when defects within the heart allow dark deoxygenated blood that has not yet picked up a fresh supply of oxygen from the lungs to mix with the oxygenated red blood returning from the lungs. The mixed blood can be seen as a bluish discoloration of the patient’s lips, fingernails and toenails.
