Binge-eating disorder is a serious condition that can cause great harm to a person's mental and physical well-being. Individuals rarely derive pleasure from a bingeing session. Low self-esteem, depression, and poor body image are closely associated with binge-eating disorder. These negative feelings are often exacerbated by the guilt and disgust that follow a bingeing episode, which may in turn lead to further binges and establish a vicious and destructive cycle.
Regular bingeing can cause people with this eating disorder to gain large amounts of weight. Most individuals with binge-eating disorder are overweight or obese, and this makes them vulnerable to the very serious complications associated with excess weight, including certain cancers, heart disease, and diabetes.
