Stacy Wiegman, PharmD, Pharmacy, answeredAlzheimer's disease is a condition that is defined by the severe impairment of behavioral and intellectual functioning. Some of the symptoms of Alzheimer's are linked to an abnormal excitement of certain receptors (called NMDA) on the surface of brain (nerve) cells, resulting in damage or death of those cells. Namenda treats the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by binding to the NMDA receptors and deterring them from becoming overly excited. Namenda is the first drug of its kind to take this approach to treating Alzheimer's disease.
