If you are the caregiver of an extremely ill patient, you have a difficult but very rewarding job.
Here are a few things to consider:
- Make the patient as comfortable as possible. Turn frequently so that the patient does not develop bed sores. Use extra pillows to provide support for arms and legs. Step back and see if the patient looks comfortable.
- Be open to conversation from the patient. If this is a terminal condition, the patient may want to talk about what is happening. Patients who are facing death sometimes feel isolated because their loved ones are afraid to talk about death.
- See if the patient qualifies to have HOSPICE visit the home or may want to be moved to a facility. There are options that should be explored.
- As a caregiver, let others know what type of help you may need. Family and friends are always glad to help.
