Patrick Maguire, MD, Oncology, answeredThe most common side effects of accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) are infection and seroma (firm fluid-filled area that can be tender) at the operative site or tumor bed in the breast. These can occur in about 10% of patients. Long term, there's a small risk of chronic pain and/or fibrosis (scarring) at the site. In rare cases, the surgical wound or incision site can fail to heal, requiring further surgery.
