Halobetasol ointment is a prescription medication that is used to reduce the itching, swelling, redness and irritation caused by certain skin conditions, such as dermatitis, eczema, allergies and rashes. It is a type of medication called a topical corticosteroid, and it helps reduce inflammation in the skin. To use halobetasol ointment, wash and dry the affected area of skin. Spread a thin layer of halobetasol ointment to the affected area and rub it in. Usually, halobetasol ointment should be applied once or twice a day, or as directed by your doctor. Do not cover the affected area with a bandage or wrap unless your doctor tells you to do so. Use halobetasol ointment exactly as prescribed by your doctor; using it for longer than recommended, which is usually two weeks, may increase the risk for serious side effects. Make sure you do not get halobetasol ointment in or near the eyes, nose or mouth. If the medication gets in those areas, rinse with lots of water. Halobetasol is the generic name for the active ingredient used in the brand-name medication Ultravate. Talk to your doctor to determine whether halobetasol ointment is right for you.
