Physix - Fitness Training and Nutrition

Our Mission

We are tired of the lies and false promises so prevalent in the health and wellness industry.  We are tired of the high-pressure sales tactics that have scared the neediest away.  We are tired of the intimidation and judgment felt by almost everyone the first time they enter a gym.

At Physix, our mission is to educate and motivate regular, everyday people - just like you.  We want you to reach reasonable, achievable fitness goals without judgment, fear, or intimidation.

We are your coach and your teacher.  We can't do the work for you but we will be there with you every step of the way.

It’s official.  I’m old.  The MeeMaw train has left the station and I’m riding in first class.  I fought the passing birthdays like a champ.  I’d shave off a few years when asked my age.  I’d try to keep up with ever-changing cultural things – music, hair (luckily I passed through the Flock of Seagulls phase quickly), hip

There’s one universally loathed exercise:  the pull-up.  We helplessly dangle, barely able to grip the bar, begging our muscles to move something, and all we usually manage are wild feet kicks, if we can hang at all.  We avoid the whole nonsense – how often do I *ever* need to pull myself up.  Who

A weight-loss product has me shaking my fist in the air, again.  The bad ones are like cockroaches – a scourge in my plight.  Just when I feel like I’ve stomped them all, there’s another.  You think I’d tire of these fits, but alas.

This new product is a carbon copy of a previous one I wrote about a few

Should women be concerned about bulkiness from strength training?

I've answered this question (in other forms) a few times - even here on Sharecare. :-)

My first question is what do you mean by "bulky?" Will lifting weights increase your muscle mass? Depending on how you train and eat, yes. Men can "bulk up" more than women - thanks to hormones. Women who just lift

How does resistance training build bone density?

There is a theory known as Wolff's Law - bone will adapt in response to stresses placed upon it (Google it to read more).

I like to picture a semi-flexible ruler I hold vertically (like one of my leg bones). If I stand it on a hard surface and push down on it, it bows out. The same happens to our

In the land of dreaded exercises, only the pull-up garners more eye rolls and mumbled curse words than the push-up.  They are dang hard.  Rocky Balboa can crank them out one-handed, but the rest of us fall on our face, and then lie there squealing as we beg our noncompliant muscles to get us back up.

Apparently we’ve found a gluttony gene.  For those that have compulsive needs to eat non-stop, some scientists believe this gene, and its role in signaling fullness, is implicated.  A genetic role of the dice could be to blame for our poundage.

Yeah, not.  While any new finding is intriguing on its own merit

Is fitness more important than weight?

I think this is the kind of question we ask when we really want the answer to be "yes."  So, when experts respond with "yes, being fit is more important than being fat" or "weight is just a number on a scale" or "you can have a high BMI and be very fit" - we hear what we want:  it's totally ok to

To achieve weight loss, should I just eat less?

I can just about guarantee you'll have to eat less food to lose weight - and you'll need to do a few other things too. And, of course the devil is in the details!  How do you know it's less? How much is enough? What does my body need to lose or maintain weight? The magic answer to all of these qu

Why doesn't fasting lead to weight loss?

If you do it long enough, it will - look at starving nations for proof. This method of weight loss is NOT recommended.

If you fast for a few days expecting some crazy loss rate, you may or may not see it. Chances are, your body started convincing you a nap sounded really good, let's skip the gym

Is alcohol bad for weight loss?

Dr. Mike Clark's answer to this question is a good one. Alcohol and weight loss is about more then just calories - alcohol impacts hormonal systems, impairs judgment (the devil in your head says you DESERVE that cheese-covered, potato skin), and generally jacks you up (a very fitness technical term).

What type of exercise equipment would be good for weight loss?

A pair of walking shoes. Seriously. Match "moving your body" with food logging (knock out about 500-750 calories/day from your current intake) and voila!  Walking shoes are easy to pack for a trip, can be purchased everywhere, and don't require special training to use them. Maybe try some peppy music
