Most health plans will require a referral from a primary care specialist before seeing another specialist such as a cardiologist or neurologist. However, some plans do not require a referral. It is best to check with your health plan before seeing another specialist to see if a referral is required. If one is required and you do not have one, you could end up paying the entire bill.

- Will I have to see a primary care provider for referrals to specialists?
Is a doctor board certified in a specific field of medicine?
It is important to select a doctor who is board certified in the specialty they practice. Board certification does not assure you the doctor is excellent, but it does assure you he/she has had appropriate training by having completed at an approved residency of at least three years and passed an exam.
How can I find out if lab tests are performed at a doctor’s office?
Some physician offices do have the capacity to do lab tests. Large medical groups, especially, may have a fully equipped and staffed clinical lab. Most physicians, however, will send their clinical lab work to outside labs that are typically better equipped, better staffed, fully accredited and independent of the physician’s control. There has always been some question about the quality of physician “in-office” labs.
