Most physicians will not see patients in their offices or at the patient’s home in the evening or on weekends. Some will, however, and there is a new practice model called Concierge Medicine in which physicians promise greater access for a fee. Typically, if a patient calls a physician after hours, that doctor, or a covering doctor, will respond, discuss symptoms and advise the patient to immediately go to the emergency department at a nearby hospital if it is a critical problem or come in to the doctor’s office the next day if the need is not urgent.

- How can I determine if a doctor will see patients at night or on weekends?
Is a doctor board certified in a specific field of medicine?
It is important to select a doctor who is board certified in the specialty they practice. Board certification does not assure you the doctor is excellent, but it does assure you he/she has had appropriate training by having completed at an approved residency of at least three years and passed an exam.
How can I determine if other doctors will be on call with my doctor?
Doctors in solo practice cannot be on call 24/7/365 so, typically, they will have an arrangement with other doctors to “cover” for their patients when they are not available. Most doctors practice in large or small groups these days so, of course, they cover for each other.
