Today, most doctors practice in groups, either large or small. In fact, as of December 2010, more doctors were employed by hospitals than were in private practice.

- How can I determine if a doctor is part of a group medical practice?
What is an internal medicine doctor?
Robin Miller, MD, Integrative Medicine, answeredAn internal medicine doctor is a doctor who treats adults. Internists are trained in general medicine so that they take care of patients for overall health conditions that range from the top of the body down to the toes. That would include areas such as the brain, thyroid, heart, stomach, liver, bones and even mental health.
Once doctors are trained in internal medicine they may decide to specialize in specific areas such as Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Neurology to name a few. All these specialists have been trained as internists first.
A general internist is the kind of doctor who you might go to as a regular physician for preventive and ongoing care as you age. If you have a problem, he or she can evaluate your condition and either treat you or refer you to the appropriate specialist. An internist can maintain the overall view of what is going on with you and manage the big picture when it comes to your health.
What kind of training do family doctors have?
Family doctors are physicians who have been trained in the medical specialty of Family Practice. Their training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness in both children and adults, including obstetrics. Many hospitals, however, do not grant obstetrical privileges (delivering babies) to Family Practitioners as they have sufficient Ob-Gyns to deliver that care.
