Most physicians will not see patients in their offices or at the patient’s home in the evening or on weekends. Some will, however, and there is a new practice model called Concierge Medicine in which physicians promise greater access for a fee. Typically, if a patient calls a physician after hours, that doctor, or a covering doctor, will respond, discuss symptoms and advise the patient to immediately go to the emergency department at a nearby hospital if it is a critical problem or come in to the doctor’s office the next day if the need is not urgent.

- How can I determine if a doctor will see patients at night or on weekends?
Why do I need a doctor if I am healthy?
Everyone needs a doctor, even when they are healthy, because a doctor not only manages and cures illness, but also, hopefully, helps prevent illness and promotes wellness. Having a regular relationship with your primary care doctor is important and can be critical in diagnosing potential issues. It is difficult for a doctor you are seeing for the first time to know your history, your body, your normal function and presentation, and your emotions to recognize differences that may indicate problems.
Should I make an appointment to meet a new doctor?
When you schedule your first appointment with a doctor you should take the view you are interviewing the doctor to see if he or she is one you would like to care for you. Have a list of questions ready and do not be hesitant to raise issues of concern to you. Of course, the doctor will be discussing your health history and getting to know you at the same time.
