Most health plans will require a referral from a primary care specialist before seeing another specialist such as a cardiologist or neurologist. However, some plans do not require a referral. It is best to check with your health plan before seeing another specialist to see if a referral is required. If one is required and you do not have one, you could end up paying the entire bill.

How can I find a good general practitioner where I live?
Stuart Linder, MD, Plastic/reconstructive Surgery, answeredBrowse the internet to find a good general practitioner or any doctor. Check out credentials and board certification. Check with the nearby hospital for the chief of staff for the specialty you desire. Always seek 2 if not 3 consultations and bring a check list of questions with you during your visit.
Should I make an appointment to meet a new doctor?
When you schedule your first appointment with a doctor you should take the view you are interviewing the doctor to see if he or she is one you would like to care for you. Have a list of questions ready and do not be hesitant to raise issues of concern to you. Of course, the doctor will be discussing your health history and getting to know you at the same time.
